Aims & objectives

Aims

To extend the earlier technical Life Table sessions by showing how  real data generated by longitudinal studies or cross sectional surveys is dealt with. In particular to introduce the concept of censoring and how the Life Table copes with this, and the further concept of cohort and period Life Tables.

Objectives

  1. To show the form of data that is necessary to produce life tables, both from longitudinal studies and from cross-sectional surveys.
  2. To demonstrate how that data is processed to form life tables.
  3. To illustrate censoring and how that is handled by life tables.
  4. To differentiate between cohort and period life tables.
  5. To illustrate the difference in data processing that produces cohort or period life tables and the differences between them.
